New Wineskins Press Release

In the past twenty-four hours, everything has changed. Tuesday's actions of the General Assembly of the P.C.U.S.A. has turned presbyterianism on its head.

By adopting recommendation five of the Theological Task Force report, the 217th assembly of the P.C.U.S.A. has forsaken its constitutional covenant., abandoned its Presbyterian heritage and opened the door to the blatant disregard of biblical standards, paving the way for a climate in which, “each does what is right in his own eyes.”

The actions of this assembly have thrown our denomination into a crisis. Yet the God who delights to bring new creation out of chaos remains sovereign over our life as presbyterians. We recognize in this moment of crisis and profound disappointment a God given opportunity. This world longs to see us give faithful expression to our covenantal life. Now is the time. For five years men and women in the New Wineskins Initiative have worked to articulate a vision for a life together as Presbyterians that is marked by theological and ethical integrity, missional faithfulness and structural effectiveness. We believe that the action of this assembly confirms the need for a new wineskin.

How shall we respond? Together. These are days that require of us that we stand with those who are one in spirit. We rejoice at the sense of common purpose that increasingly characterizes our mutual efforts as organizations seeking renewal and reform, and believe that now more than ever we must seek and serve God together, affirming one another’s work wherever possible as side-by-side we work to preserve a biblically faithful presbyterian fellowship.

On July 19, in Tulsa, the second annual convocation of the New Wineskin Initiative begins. At that event we will seek and enjoy God, actively explore ways to live out our vision, and wrestle with how God may wish to move us together towards his preferred future. All who share our concerns and our hope are enthusiastically invited to attend the convocation and learn more of the vision to which we believe God may be calling us.

The decision of the assembly to forsake our presbyterian heritage for the sake of structural unity has left many shaken, disheartened, and deeply concerned, but with God there is always hope. We are confident that God will be faithful to use this crisis to surface the need for, to awaken our desire for, the new work God wishes to do among us. In God’s hands, and with our humble and prayerful cooperation, these events can serve to move us closer to becoming the faithful community of Presbyterians for which God and we long together.

Isaiah 41:17-21 NIV

21 "The poor and needy search for water,
       but there is none;
their tongues are parched with thirst.
       But I the LORD will answer them;
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.

18 I will make rivers flow on barren heights,
       and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert into pools of water,
and the parched ground into springs.

19 I will put in the desert
the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive.
I will set pines in the wasteland,
the fir and the cypress together,

20 so that people may see and know,
       may consider and understand,
that the hand of the LORD has done this,
that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

21 "Present your case," says the LORD.
"Set forth your arguments," says Jacob's King

Henderson FAQ's

David Henderson recently wrote on Presbyweb an article on Frequently Asked Questions on the New Wineskins.

Many people make an assumption that the Wineskins Initiative is schismatic.  David writes, "Those who have called New Wineskins schismatic misunderstand our work. The New Wineskins Initiative is not a separatist movement. We have no desire to gather together a small band of miffed members and leave. In fact, just the opposite is true. We intend the NWI to be a uniting movement. In the face of forces that threaten the unity of the body of Christ, we are presenting a vision for the denomination that is faithful to its past and that can continue to unite us into the future.

But we are seeking to uphold the unity of the Church around those things which we believe the Scriptures tell us are to be the basis of our unity – around beliefs and practices, not name or structure. Is it schismatic to seek to restore theological, ethical, and missional unity to our life together as presbyterians?"

We'd love for this site to once again become a place of conversation.  We'll be posting more of the news of the Wineskins, and we invite you to join the conversation once again.

Having been a part of this from the beginning, I truly believe it is not the intention of the Wineskins to create schism.  So, do you think the Wineskins is schismatic?

Eve of Convocation

Grapes_church_1People have begun to arrive in Minneapolis on the eve of the Wineskins convocation. Christ Church is a perfect venue and planners of the event have been preparing packets, hanging up banners and getting everything ready.  Most of all, we've been enjoying each other's company and lifting up the convocation in prayer in anticipation of God doing great things.

In the next couple of days, we'll post pictures and give reports on the happenings of the New Wineskins Convocation.  We have over 400 people pre-registered, about half of them being delegates from over 70 endorsing churches.  Keep us in  prayer  as we seek to come together in worship in the presence of God and to follow Him into what it means to be a Presbyterian body in the 21st Century.

Dallas Workgroup

Crw_4785_edited1_2 A workgroup of the New Wineskins group has been together in Dallas today.  We have been working towards finalizing a first draft of a proposed constitution of a 21st century reformed body.  Bathed in prayer and worship, laughter and the Spirit of God, we've worked hard.

Take a look at some pictures of a few of the 30 or so that have joined together for this good work.  And look for the fruit of it in the coming weeks as we put all the parts together for the convocation in June!

“Bold new design” to be presented

“Bold new design” to be presented for Presbyterian Church (USA) WICHITA, Kansas — For the past three years a group of ministers and lay people from across the country has been working to draft what they describe as a “bold new design” for the Presbyterian Church (USA). Among the elements proposed by the New Wineskins Task Force are new statements of faith essentials and ethical imperatives. A revised constitution, calling for greater flexibility and a new approach to leadership development at the congregational level and a pared-down, adaptive service structure at the national level, is also part of their work.

Next summer those design elements will be further refined at a national convocation titled “Pioneering the 21st Century Church — A New Wineskins Convocation,” scheduled to take place on June 15-18, 2005, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Christ Presbyterian Church, a growing 4100 member congregation, is hosting the event.

Ethical Imperatives

Part of the vision of a new denominational reality is a set of ethical imperatives. These are a timely application of the essential tenets to the issues of the day. While the essential tenets are to be prescriptive and uniform over time, this application of them would change with the issues of the day. As such, scruples would be allowed. Still, they make a bold statement about where the gospel confronts a culture.

Essential Tenets

It is our conviction that it is not our polity nor our property that connects us. Our confessional faith unites us as the body of Christ (Eph 4:5).

Attached is a draft of a proposed confessional statement that could be subscriptive for leadership and directive for theological education.

Key Design Elements of a New Denominational Structure

We envision a wholly new design of the structure of a reformed, 21st century denomination. The design is to serve the purposes and vision of ministry - not the other way around.

Take a look at elements of a new structure!
